KOTA KINABALU: Sabab in now fully grown up and matured, and has the full capacity to function as a free and independent nation.

Saying this in a statement here, Datuk Dr. Jeffrey G Kitingan, the president of the Parti Solidariti Tanahairku (STAR), also said that after being with Sarawak in the Malaysian federation for 55 years as junior partners and semi-colonies under Malaya, it is high time for the Borneo nations become equal partners with Malaya in the truest sense of the words.

“We need to bring to reality equal partnership in all aspects of a federal union by drafting and passing a new federal constitution which will reflect this partnership and at the same time giving full autonomy to Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.

The Bingkor Assemblyman and Keningau Member of Parliament stressed that the new structure must be sealed between Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak to totally replace the MA63 which has long been outdated because it was drafted during the British rule.

“Sabah and Sarawak are no longer colonies and now have their own capacities with its own powers under the universal concept of ‘self-determination’,” he said. “The new agreement, to be called Malaysian Union Agreement 2020 (MUA2020), should be drafted to reflect the current conditions, taking into account the people’s aspiration and spirits of the Borneo territories.

“The positive result of the signing of MUA2020 would be no less than full independence ad full nationhood for all territories,” Dr. Jeffrey explained. “Hence, Malaysia will no longer be known as the Malaysian Federation but the Malaysian Union, modelled closely on the European Union which preserves the full independence of its every country member but all coming under one monetary currency and defence.”

Dr. Jeffrey also opined that anymore attempt to continue with the current MA63, which has long been under heavy criticism, will only end up in the country paying a heavy cost politically and socioeconomically.
